Fighting to Save our NHS from profiteers

999logofinal_Pill_straight_360 999 Blog

Dear (MP NAME)

As your constituent I would like you to defend our NHS against the damaging changes that are being proposed by NHS England/Improvement.

A "public" consultation on new NHS legislation has just closed after only six weeks. Did you know about it?

I doubt that many of your constituents did as it was launched on the 27th November with little/no announcement to the public and at a time when most of the country were focused on the confusion surrounding COVID19; leaving the EU; vaccines; Christmas preparations and fear of job losses.

Six weeks is an insulting short amount of time for a consultation on something as complex and important as proposed legislation changes that will give strategic control of fragmented local health and social care systems (so-called Integrated Care Systems) to US profiteering companies and further restrict our access to NHS treatments. Even members of Patient Participation Groups are saying that they had not been told of it. It certainly appears to be NHS England pushing major changes to the NHS under the radar.

I am deeply concerned that NHSE has not been sincere in its attempt to consult widely with the public. This is an important consultation because it is about reorganising the NHS into a configuration which fundamentally changes the nature of the service. The public need to understand what is happening and their views need to be sought widely.

Please will you use your position and infleunce to join others in demanding that:

NHS England/Improvement need to:

Extend the consultation deadline by another two months, to 8 March 2021.

Spell out their meaning in a new document written in plain easy to understand English.

Publicise the consultation properly in places where ordinary people will see it - eg. social media community pages, local authority websites and GP Surgeries.

Please make the case for extending and publicising further this important consultation.

We have told our MPs that NHS England/Improvement need to:

  • Extend the consultation deadline by another two months, to 8 March 2021.

  • Spell out their meaning in a new document written in plain English, free of jargon,

  • Publicise the consultation in places where ordinary people will see it

Please tell your MP too. Here’s a template email you can adapt and send to your MP.

Please tell your MP this is not good enough!

The recent consultation was about new NHS legislation that would give strategic control of fragmented local health and social care systems to US profiteering companies and further restrict our access to NHS treatments.

But we know from people’s comments and questions that the consultation document and online survey questions were incomprehensible to the general public.

“Those questions made no sense to me”, said one of our neighbours.

“Reading the NHS England Integrated Care: Next Steps consultation document didn't help,”

said a Parish Councillor

The NHS England document does not make clear that the proposed legislation will fundamentally change the structure and ethos of the NHS, by cementing changes introduced through the 2014-19 Five Year Forward View plan.

This has required huge cuts and privatisation of services, aimed at transforming the NHS into a limited, restricted health service based on the model of the US Medicare system that provides limited publicly-funded healthcare for people who are too poor or sick to afford private health insurance.

Since 2016, these changes have been implemented through so-called Sustainability and Transformation Plans for 44 areas - without any legal authorisation. Now the proposed NHS legislation would fix these changes in place in a way that would be next to impossible to undo.
